I Gusti Ayu Putu Maharani

The First Indonesian and First Indonesian Woman to Win a CDP WF Medal at International Level – Current CDP WF World Champion, Women’s Open Weight “kulata” Division

1998 -2000 Tarung Derajat

This was the first year Rani was introduced to the world of martial arts. She was introduced by a good friend to the Indonesian martial art of “Tarung Derajat” also well known as “AA Boxer”. The name derives from the Indonesian words “Tarung” meaning FIGHT and “Derajat” meaning DIGNITY. The common meaning of the name is to “Fight for Dignity”. The art was founded by Achmad Deradjat. The system incorporates techniques from and has similarities with Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Kyokushin Karate, ITF Taekwon-Do, Aikijujutsu, and Wrestling as a result of the founder’s previous experience. Rani fell in love with this martial art due to it’s unique combination of many exciting martial arts such as Aikido, Karate, Tae Kwon Do, etc. Rani said….

“What resulted was a system with new techniques that appealed to me as a woman to increase confidence concerning self defense (At this time there was only a total of 5 females training in the art).

Rani was also attracted to martial arts training by her desire to learn more about this particular martial art and the way it builds the body’s endurance. Being an asthmatic Rani was surprised that since she had commenced martial arts training she never suffered an asthma attack. Rani felt that her martial arts training had cured her medical condition as well as developing her confidence. She trained for approximately 3 (three) years in the system, and ended up gaining her blue belt in the style.

At this time Tarung Derajat had no regular competitions and was still considered a street sport. The organization needed to be certified and approved prior to obtaining official status as one of the national sports in Indonesia being allowed to compete as a National Sport (PON). At this stage however the organization would have closed Kumite competitions among the styles different Dojos. Now the system has grown considerably with recognized sporting events throughout the country and a membership in the millions of practitioners.

Rani trained Tarung Derajat up until mid 2000 before having to stop training to focus on her university studies as well as her work commitments.

2006 - Cacoy Doce Pares World Federation (CDP WF)

This is the year That Rani was introduced to another new martial art to Indonesia named “Arnis Eskrima” as taught by the CDP WF .

I know Arnis Eskrima when I was seeing Master Glen Gardiner training with some of his friends in a sports club at Kemang. The Arnis’s techniques that he showed me made me curious because the more i see the more i notice that there are so many things that we could do to protect our self just by using a stick. And surprisingly we can use other methods or tools other than a stick but still using that same Arnis techniques for self protection.

From that first impression Rani decided to learn more about Arnis Eskrima from Master Glen and she started to join the training intensively. In November 2006, it was her first experience to join the CDP WF Arnis Eskrima World Championship held in Cebu City– Philippines.

I was surprised when Master Glen truly motivated me to join the championship. I wasn’t that confident because I trully realized that I had just learned the Art and felt I was not skilled enough to compete in a world championship. But his motivation and also the full support from all of my friends and the team encouraged me to compete.

Rani was the first Indonesian and first woman from Indonesia to win a medal at best pokies online the World championship in this martial art discipline. She won 1 (one) bronze medal in the Woman's Light Weight Single Stick Division facing competitors from the Philippines and Poland. This was Rani’s first medal representing Indonesia.

2007

In 2007, Indonesia had the opportunity from the CDP WF (Cacoy Doce Pares World Federation) to host the 2007 World Championship which was also the 75th year anniversary of the organizations existence. The Championship was held at Pasar Festival, Kuningan, South Jakarta. In this event Rani received 2 (two) gold medals representing Indonesia, 1 (one) gold medal in the Woman’s Light Weight Single Stick Division and 1 (one) gold medal in the Woman’s Light Weight Double Stick Division. Rani also competed in the “kulata” Division. “Kulata” (a Tagalog word meaning to “PUNISH”) is an open weight division where competitors have no body armor protection except a helmet, gloves and groin guard. This event is known as the most painful and challenging as competitors fight full force with their weapons with minimal body protection. It is also the most wanted and favorite event in the competition. Rani competed in the event but did not obtain a placing.

2008

Rani continued to train with the CMAA, The Combined Martial Arts Academy under the tutelage of 6th Dan CDP WF Instructor Glen Gardiner.

2009

In April 2009, the CDP WF World Championship held once more in Cebu City – Philippines. Rani flew back to Cebu with the Indonesian team from the CMAA to compete.

This year, I’m not just competing in the sparring divisions but also in the “kata” or “Sayaw” Division as well. This was my first “kata” competition with the team and we had been training so hard to ensure that we can perform the best in this competition. Because we really wanted to win more medals so as not to embarrass Indonesia. But in this “kata” competition, I did not manage to win any medals. But I was proud of myself that I can perform something in this competition even if I did not win a medal.

Rani, managed to win a silver medal in the Woman's 18-39 Double Stick Division. In 2009, Rani also competed again in the “kulata” Division. This moment would never be forgotten by Rani as she was about to enter the first heat of the division she received a phone call from her mother informing her that her young son had been hospitalized due to his illness. Trying hard to maintain her concentration, and trying to control her emotions she was supported by her team mates encouraging her that everything would be okay.

Rani recalled that….

I entered the ring with a huge wish of forgiveness from my son as I was not able to be beside him and I promised myself that I will never forgive myself if I could not get any medals in the “kulata” event.

The competition started and Rani channeled what she described as anger, trying to perform her best until the referee blew his whistle to stop the first 3 round fight. Rani had won her first fight of the division competing and defeating the competitor from the Philipipnes. Rani fought on to the finals where she faced off with the then current World Champion, Australian, Andrea Weatley. Rani could not think of anything else but to fight and hit. This bout was a show stopper with competitors from other fights crowding around the Woman’s Kulata Final. Rani emerged victorious winning the gold medal for her son and becoming the new and still current World Champion in the Woman’s Open Weight “kulata” Division.

“Thank’s to God and all of you in the Team that motivated and encouraged me so at this time I became like what I am now.”
